Macy was working in the charge nurse role when she discovered a patient need. A was admitted directly after delivering a baby girl at UMC. The baby was admitted to NICU and A was transferred to Covenant East 7 for a hematologic issue that occurred post-partum. A was struggling with many issues, not feeling well (fever, etc.), depression because she could not be with her baby, and struggling with trying to pump her breast milk to feed her baby during all this. During Macy's rounds, she noticed the need for a pumping bra and also the need for this new momma to see her baby. Since the baby was in NICU at UMC, she knew she couldn't arrange for the baby to come here so Macy called the NICU at UMC and discussed the possibility of allowing a family member to give the nurses their phone and letting A FaceTime her baby. Everyone agreed to help her and she was able to see her baby and talk to her. This was very special and really helped with A's depression and feelings of despair.
Later on in the shift, the Nurse Manager was on the unit and Macy mentioned the need for a pumping bra. The Nursing Director was notified of this need. She was coming to the hospital to meet with another manager and she got the patient's bra size and went to the store and bought the patient a pumping bra and brought it up to her with a small gift for the baby. She really went out of her way before coming to the hospital to help this Mama. A was so grateful for everything and was able to pump easier and supply milk for her baby.
