I first met Kenzie Field on the morning my daughters and I were allowed to see my husband D following his heart transplant. Assigned to be his nurse in ICU that morning, she met us at his doorway and prepared us for what we would be seeing when we entered his room. It was an emotional moment for us and she did a fabulous job in answering our many questions and addressing our concerns. This was the beginning of our journey with her guiding us every step of the way for the first four days of his stay in ICU. She was scheduled to work in another section of the department. Kenzie, though, could not leave D to be cared for by someone else, and so she changed her schedule to be with us. Even though D was sleeping through much of this time, she cared for him and for us with great compassion. Talk about "Human Care"! Kenzie is quite unique in the many ways in which she cares not only for the patient but also the family.
When my husband was transferred to the cardio unit Kenzie visited us there. The following She was on duty in ICU when she heard a code blue called for D's room. She ran to help, grabbed me and sat with me in the waiting room on that floor while the doctors and nurses worked on my husband. When he was taken back to ICU, she went with me and watched over me answering all my questions when D coded there, as well. Thankfully, our daughters were not at Seton to witness all this. However, Kenzie was like another daughter in the ways she cared for me.
During D's second stay in ICU, it was comforting to have a familiar nurse taking care of him and us, as well. He felt so comforted in knowing that Kenzie was there with him. He was transferred once again to the cardio unit and Kenzie came to say goodbye when we finally went home.
She is the most caring nurse that I have ever experienced. From the way in which all the doctors knew her and listened to her, I could tell that they also held her in high regard. Kenzie is so deserving of special recognition at Seton. The hospital is very fortunate to have her in ICU. She deserves the DAISY Award for her kindnesses toward D, our daughters and me.
