I truly want to honor Mom's nurse, Nelda. She went above and beyond, especially on a busy weekend, to make sure one mama got through to her daughter.
I am a nurse and used to work on 2 East 50 years ago. Every admission to the hospital for my mom or my dad, I was always able to stay and help take care of them. I couldn't do that this admission due to the visitor restrictions that were in place during the COVID-19 response. My heart broke because I couldn't see my 94-year-old mom and I had to trust the staff to take excellent care of her. I want you to know how much my family and I appreciate the extra effort that mom's nurse, Nelda took to facilitate a FaceTime session for mom, my daughter, and me. I cried when I saw my mom's face smiling back at us. She was laughing and smiling and we wished each other Happy Mother's Day as the transport team waited for us to blow kisses of love and good health. I never thought my mom would be one of those patients I see on TV getting to FaceTime home from a hospital. It happened. This is real. I truly want to honor Mom's nurse, Nelda. She went above and beyond, especially on a busy weekend, to make sure one mama got through to her daughter. As a Holistic Nurse, I see this as a compassionate heartfelt act, one that she took the extra step to bring a family together. I took a screenshot and shared it with family across the states. Everyone rejoiced seeing 'Mommom' on Mother's Day blowing them a kiss. I will be forever grateful for this small yet universal act. This is why I am a nurse. This is why I continue to nurse after 50 years. Bless all who read this and especially bless Nelda. I pray for her daily. And I pray for all healthcare workers who sacrifice for humanity. Thank you.
