If you see Ly Ly sitting quietly at her desk, which is not often, you know she is diligently working on a project or finding resources for staff or patients. When you talk to Ly Ly you hear that she is very soft spoken, but don't let her quiet voice fool you. She is a powerful leader and fosters an environment of extraordinary care.
Last year Ly Ly helped form the Perioperative Practice and Standards Committee. From the start, she has encouraged the staff to own their practice. She made certain that the committee work was meaningful and important to their respective work. This led to her nurturing the staff into the role of committee members who have taken the reins and are improving their practice environment. The members of the Perioperative Practice and Standards Committee have also made huge gains in using evidence to guide their practice. Recently, they gathered and reviewed the literature regarding "plume in the OR". Passionate members, with Ly Ly's support, educated OR staff and Surgeons about the dangers of OR smoke and shared the evidence to support a "smoke-free" environment. This team applied for and was awarded the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Surgical Smoke-Free Recognition Program -Silver Go Clear Award.
Such an accomplishment in such a short period of time. This is just one of the many ways Ly Ly is making a difference for, not only for our patients but for our nurses. Her willingness to go out on limb and help staff to expand their influence cultivates passion and this is good for the nurses, which is good for the patients they care for!
