I have worked with Lucy for many years. I have seen how she cares for our NICU babies and educates their parents. I have always known what a great nurse she is.
Recently, I had the opportunity to personally receive the benefits of her kindness and nursing skills. My daughter was sent to the Winter Haven Women's Hospital by her OB physician. She was 36 weeks pregnant and her blood pressure was elevated. The next day, my grandson was born. Although he was little, just 5lbs, 1oz, and 17½ inches, he was doing well and was discharged home with my daughter and son-in-law on Friday.
On Sunday my grandson had to be readmitted to the Women's Hospital for double phototherapy. My daughter and son-in-law were tired new parents. The baby was becoming lethargic due to his high bilirubin level. I was in the hospital room when Lucy came walking in the door at shift change. Fortunately for us, Lucy was going to be working the night shift. When I saw her smiling face, I knew that my grandson, daughter and son-in-law would be in good hands. I was able to leave the hospital knowing they would be cared for by Lucy.
The next morning, when I returned to the hospital, my daughter told me about the wonderful care she received during the night. Lucy helped her nurse the baby on one side, while using the breast pump on the other side. Then my son-in-law would feed the baby a bottle with the pumped breast milk. It was a team effort, to try to minimize the time the baby would be out from under the phototherapy. My daughter and son-in-law trusted Lucy completely and were able to sleep in between feedings. They knew Lucy would be checking on the baby and would wake them up when it was time to feed. Her care and dedication were amazing. The baby's bilirubin level dropped. My daughter continued to nurse and pump. The baby's levels continued to drop and he was able to be discharged home again on Tuesday.
Lucy is an amazing nurse and caring individual. She made a difference for my family and we will be forever grateful that Lucy was working that night.
