Luchia Hansen was the nurse for a patient who was pregnant with a life threatening atypical coagulopathy in ICU. The patient was actively bleeding and receiving multiple blood transfusions. It was determined that her unborn baby was not viable and was not being monitored. Additionally, the team doubted that the patient would survive the delivery. Throughout the preparation and placing lines, the patient was weak but conscious. Luchia was able to pray with her, telling her she may not survive but in earnest, prayed that she and her baby would live.
The plan was to have the patient deliver on the unit but after collaboration with the SICU and OB teams, the patient was transported to the OR for delivery.
When Luchia returned the next day not only had the patient survived the delivery but the baby was absolutely healthy and the team was able to extubate the patient. Luchia asked the patient if it would be okay to go to the nursery and take some pictures so that she would be able to see her baby. With the help of the NICU RN, Luchia took photos and imprinted the baby's tiny feet. Luchia made the patient a welcome baby poster and put it up for all to see.
Luchia would not be back the following day but she couldn't get the patient or the baby off of her mind. So with a welcome gift in hand, Luchia headed back to work to visit. Luchia was able to assist the RN and PCA bring the patient to the NICU to see her baby boy for the very first time.
This is a testament that while we can do many things medically, we can only assist God—giving Him the opportunity to show us His power.
