It was a quiet morning when nurses were receiving handover from the night staff. One of the day duty nurses who received endorsement was Lorna Bumatay. She is an exceptional nurse in CSICU. She performs well as a bedside nurse and as a Charge Nurse – very meticulous, precise in practicing safety checks and assessment and also responsive to patients’ needs.
One example was when she received handover that day. Though her patient was considered for transfer, her initial assessment showed that the patient was uncomfortable, tachypneic, and with a distended abdomen. She felt compassion for the patient because the patient had undergone many surgeries including AVSD Repair and Permanent Pacemaker Implantation. She acted promptly as the patient’s advocate. She informed the intensivist and consultant of her findings and the patient was then reassessed thoroughly and referred to the pediatric general surgeon immediately.
Because of her empathy and actions as a patient advocate, early detection of abnormalities and STAT response of the team, the patient was brought to OR for exploratory laparotomy and had a colostomy.
The patient returned comfortable, other complications were prevented and the patient’s life was saved.
I nominate Lorna Bumatay for the DAISY award for her exceptional performance and compassion to the patient.
