I had my prostate removed due to cancer and Lonnie was my night nurse. He was very attentive and responsive to my needs and closely followed the surgeon's orders in regards to pain management. This all falls under the "Expectation" of a good conscientious nurse. What would follow the next day during the day shift and Lonnie's "above and beyond", focus, response and advocacy for me may have saved my life! I was having excruciating pain and suffering clearly due to the surgery, however, the pain management plan was not being followed, allowing the level of pain to escalate to an unmanageable level which then led to a self-administering PSA machine. I was in a severe crisis level of pain. This was a deviation away from my surgeon's original orders that had worked so well the night before. At shift change, Lonnie returned as my night nurse. He was the one who noticed that as the evening wore on I was quickly becoming over-medicated and the pain was not reduced. I was in crisis with shallow breathing, continued extreme pain, and groggy responsiveness. My wife wanted to go back to the original doctor's orders. Lonnie advocated that direction as well based on his experience and intuition from my care the night before. Something had gone very wrong and he recognized it. He stood on that belief even when others on the floor did not agree and did not want to contact the on-call doctor. He made this case to the hospital supervisor, with accurate and detailed data, advocating for a 2nd call to the doctor. She recognized his accurate assessment and urgency to my now crisis level pain and shallow breathing. He successfully "with the facts" got the orders reverted and restored the original action plan. Lonnie stayed very close through the process of stabilizing my pain and my breathing. Somewhere around 3:00 am I was near normal respiration and the pain almost tolerable "4-5" range. I will always be grateful that he listened to my wife but, more importantly, recognized I was in trouble. He took the lead to get me back to where I had been just 24 hours earlier. We understand Lonnie is a "new" nurse, but he knew I was in trouble and he addressed it and took action. He may well have saved my life - I will always believe it!
