In September, we had a young lady on 4 Park. She had been newly diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. She and her boyfriend had been together for 13 years.Upon her dreadful diagnosis, she and her boyfriend decided to get married in the Baptist Louisville chapel ASAP.Plans were made for the wedding and for palliative treatment for her cancer.A couple of days before the wedding, Lois Sipley, who normally works on another unit was assigned to care for this patient.
As the day wore on, Lois got to know the patientand she told Lois about her upcoming wedding.Lois noticed there was no joy or excitement in her eyes when she spoke of the upcoming wedding to man she had loved for 13 years. The patient commented that "the wedding is just here in the chapel".Lois asked her about a wedding cake. The patient responded flatly "we aren't having anything".
I am pretty sure the Lord pulled Nurse Lois to the palliative care unit that day for a reason. You see, Lois'sdaughter is a pastry chef in Lexington.Lois called her daughter and asked if she would make a wedding cake for the patient here. Her daughter readily agreed and Lois headed to Lexington to help decorate the cake.Lois then delivered the beautiful wedding cake to the patient for her wedding day.The patient and her family were overwhelmed.
As little girls we often imagine what our wedding day will be like and none of us imagine that it will be held in a hospital chapel after being diagnosed with a terminal disease.Because of Lois'sselfless gift, the patient and family were able to share with her a small piece of her "perfect" wedding.
