We have a severely handicapped adult daughter with cerebral palsy who was hospitalized with a high fever and elevated heart rate. Lu was kind, compassionate and caring in asking questions regarding our daughter. Lu was gentle and took her time whenever she needed to interact directly with her.
Lu showed much empathy toward us, the parents, in answering all of our questions, offering advice and making sure our daughter was comfortable. She always asked if there was anything else we needed before she left the room.
Lu was very attentive to our daughter and her needs. Our daughter had just finished a bowel cleanse due to a stool mass, and she had severe diaper rash. Lu came whenever we called her to assist with our daughter's physical needs, and she made suggestions regarding treatment of the diaper rash. Before discharge, Lu went down to another unit and brought us some medicated wipes to use on our daughter's rash.
Lu is an extremely knowledgeable and conscientious nurse. She was readily available (although she had 5 patients to care for), and she was quick to respond and "go the extra mile" to serve her patients. Prior to discharge, we needed to confirm that our daughter had received her noon meds, and Lu responded with the names of both medications and confirmed that our daughter had received them as ordered!
The first day we had Lu, we explained that although our daughter is nonverbal, she has good receptive language and understands everything spoken to her. Lu was remarkable in talking to our daughter and explaining each procedure before she preceded; just like she would have explained it to a patient who was able-bodied and verbal. Our daughter's demeanor was always calm around Lu.
Lu was such a great nurse that we looked forward to her coming into the room. Her calming presence gave all of us a sense that she was there to serve and care for our daughter's needs, and she never felt rushed or flustered. She was efficient, professional and kind. We left the hospital with the thought that Lu could work anywhere; and if we were in the healthcare business, we would try to get Lu to work for us!
Five gold stars for Lu!
