A patient on 7W was scheduled for a pH probe placement in the APC. Liz and her orientee were assigned to this patient and as soon as she received report about this patient she immediately came to me with concerns about the patient. The patient had a complex heart history and Liz was concerned that placing the probe could lead to decompensation of the patient. Liz and I called and spoke with several physicians caring for the patient to voice our concerns. The physicians decided they needed to proceed with the test, so we brought the child to the APC. I then received a phone call from the child's physician telling me they wanted to wait to do the test because they thought more about Liz's concerns and agreed that it could potentially cause problems for the patient.

This is a great example of safe care, effective care, and exceptional service provided by Liz and her orientee Jessica Nation. Not only did Liz help the medical staff think through a procedure that could have lead to unnecessary complications for a patient, she also was able to share her knowledge by walking her orientee through this scenario.

Liz showed patience and expertise by taking the time to explain her concerns to the physicians involved. Because Liz insisted on talking about her concerns, a conversation that would not have taken place otherwise, was held between the GI physician team and the floor attending. Liz helped impact a child's care in such a large way and the family will never know how Liz's diligence saved their child from potential complications.

I am very proud to work with Liz and proud of her dedication to patient care, especially in this challenging situation. Despite the push back she received when communicating with the physicians, she did what she thought was right for this child.
