Beth Lockwood is exceptional nurse. She has excellent clinical and decision making skills, but that is not what makes her extraordinary. What is more important is her empathy and compassion for the patient and their families. Not only does Beth go the extra mile, she leads others to follow.

Beth requested to be trained as a bereavement specialist in the Resolve through Sharing program. This is an intense educational program for obstetrical staff evidenced-based support to the families of newborn loss. Beth is a strong advocate for this program and has taken it to the next level. She has educated the Maternity staff on bereavement support for maternity losses. She has participated in the Nursing Skills Day to bring this information to the Newton Medical Center nurses. Beth is a co-founder of the NMC Maternity Bereavement Group. During her free time, she organizes and leads monthly meetings for parents and families to share their stories.

This past year, Beth co-created a bereavement garden on the north driveway of the Newton Medical Center. Beth rallied her family and staff to support the cause. She personally moved stone and dirt. Under a beautiful tree are two stone benches that overlook a peaceful oasis. In warm weather, you can see her at the garden watering or weeding. Because of her insight, compassion, and follow through, Newton Medical Center has a beautiful spot for anyone to sit and quietly linger.

Last October 6, she co-organized a bulb planting ceremony that was well attended by previous patients, families, and employees. In the rain, Beth lead the group to plant over 600 flower bulbs. The comments of comfort to the families were endless.

She takes heartbreaking losses and transforms them to beautiful memories. Beth has developed powerful relationships with our mothers of loss. Many past patients actively maintain a relationship with her after discharge, demonstrating extraordinary care to patients and families through development of mutual trust, respect, and emotional support. Her exceptional interpersonal skills and emotional support to the bereaving patients of loss are priceless.
