One day I was over at behavioral health to talk to a patient about potentially enrolling in residential treatment to help her address her severe anxiety and depression. Lisa brought the patient to her office to get vital signs and complete the screening process. The patient had her young daughter with her and explained that she didn't have time to take her daughter to school before the appointment. Lisa introduced the patient to me and informed her that I would be the one assisting with potential residential placement. This information caused the patient's anxiety level to elevate significantly and the patient started to have a panic attack. I could see the patient's vital signs rising on the dynamap, rapidly heading towards a full blown panic attack. Lisa immediately intervened, and was able to calm the patient down and help the patient regain composure. This was done so swiftly and with such grace and professionalism that it was evident she was a very experienced nurse. At the same time, while taking care of the patient she reassured the daughter that we would take care of her mom and that there was nothing to be afraid of. The patient regained her poise and her daughter was completely oblivious to the situation. The entire situation escalated and subsided as I was still deciding on the best way to intercede.

I learned a lot from Lisa that day. The way she handled the situation with such competence, efficacy, and compassion made me proud to be a nurse. I fantasize about all the marvelous things the field of nursing could accomplish if all nurses approached patient care like Lisa does. I don't have a single doubt in my mind that the patient and the patient's daughter will remember her for a very long time, as, that level of care leaves a great impact on a person. She is able to look at patients holistically and also able to look at the patient's family's needs. Lisa has the ability to take one look at patient and see the big picture, taking into account even their family's needs. This is a skill that even the most seasoned nurses have yet to develop, but it comes so naturally to Lisa. She is truly one of the finest nurses I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and she continuously inspires me. Thank you, Lisa, for all that you do. Our hospital is a better place because of you.
