As a Registered Nurse who works on a busy step-down unit at a local hospital, I personally know the demands of my profession and how hard a nursing job can sometimes be. I also know what it means to us when we are recognized for our devotion to the profession. So, when I became a patient myself, I was so impressed by the care I received from Lisa Pollicino that I wanted to nominate her for a DAISY Award.
When I was pregnant with my first baby, I went into labor well ahead of my due date and was so scared. I arrived at St. Charles at 5:00 AM and Lisa was my nurse for the day shift. I was still in labor 6:45 that evening when the night nurse arrived to relieve Lisa from her shift. However, even though the shift changed at 7:00 PM, Lisa assured me, "I am not leaving you." Lisa held my hand, wiped my tears, and comforted my husband and family. She advocated for me when I was in pain and calmed me when I was scared.
Throughout my delivery, Lisa and my obstetrician worked well together. They made sure that both my baby and I were safe, and at 7:24 PM, I delivered a beautiful baby girl without needing a C-section.
Lisa's commitment meant so much to me. In my opinion, for a nurse with children and a family of her own at home to remain well past her shift to ensure that I, her patient, was okay is exceptional. Lisa displayed professionalism, compassion, devotion - all the qualities an institution strives for their nurses to have. Lisa's care during my delivery reminded me why I went into nursing in the first place and made me proud to be a nurse, one who spends their career in the service of others.
