There are so many heroes walking among us each and every day — and far too often, they don't get the recognition or respect they deserve.
Some of the most underappreciated everyday heroes out there are our very own nurses. Many of us have witnessed these nurse's kindness, devotion, compassion, and care: their heroism.
They display heroism day in and day out, putting their patients' front and center, working behind the scenes to provide a caring touch and professional expertise. Today especially, I'm reminded of that heroism as I share with you a story about a very special Hero within our department.
I often hear compliments from multiple disciplines about how well the team worked together, or how the nurses saved that patient. And on more than one occasion I have had specific mention to Lisa Hamilton and the exceptional job she has done.
Lisa is a shining example of all that is described above. She is always looking for ways to expand her knowledge in Best Practice, and to share what she has learned with others. This is why she is a preceptor. She also attended a high-risk OB course, simulation-based Training and she is deeply involved in our OB Emergency Workgroup. She has a passion for quality patient care and has worked countless extra shifts, often on short notice, to assist the team and care for the patients we serve.
On one particular occasion a few months back, a message was sent to me..."My applause to all who responded in this life-saving event. I would especially like to recognize Lisa Hamilton for her heroic display of life-saving skills for the patients and direction to the staff. We are all indebted to her example of skill and determination".
This was only one of several events Lisa has had a successful hand in managing.
Which leads me to the following nomination:
Lisa works in the Women's Health department at Marshfield Medical Center—Rice Lake. I have worked with Lisa on several occasions and her skills, compassion, and patient advocacy are the epitome of excellence in nursing.
In one particular case, we both were working on a one-week-old male who presented to the Emergency Department. He was lethargic, non-responsive and had dangerously low blood sugars. When I arrived, Lisa had already assessed the patient and was informing our provider of what was needed. The patient was severely dehydrated, and an IV was not accessible. She took charge and requested an I.O. so immediate fluids could be given. She assisted in determining the appropriate bolus dose and maintenance fluids. While doing all of this, she also recognized the need for the parents to be near their son as well as their need to understand what was happening.
Lisa displayed exemplary skills, but the amazing compassion she gave to her patient and his family was beyond the standard. Her knowledge and confidence helped reassure all staff involved.
I believe the positive outcome was truly a reflection of Lisa's skills.
These are such beautiful and truthful words. And they make me so proud and grateful to have you on our team!
