Laurie provided care to an elderly gentleman who had to have Coronary Artery Bypass surgery. She took care of the patient as well as the whole family. She came in early to make sure that everything was ready and available for the case. Laurie took the time to explain things in a way that the family could understand. While interviewing the patient prior to surgery, she learned that the patient's wife needed to leave during the surgery to take care of her own chronic health issues. Laurie exchanged phone numbers with the patient's wife and committed to updating her every hour on her husband's status.
When it was determined that the patient would need a higher level of care due to the complexity of his disease, Laurie reassured the family by managing the surgeons and the transfer facility, as well as the work that had been done on the patient at Bay Area. The patient was transported with an intra-aortic balloon pump and placed on ECMO. Laurie told the family exactly where to go, where to park, and what to expect at the transfer facility. Laurie works PRN at the transfer facility and reassured the wife that she would stop by and check on them that weekend. Laurie checked on the patient and family and ended up taking care of them again.
According to the Director of Surgical Services, "I would say that the family felt very at ease knowing their loved one was in such caring, competent hands. Laurie is an awesome nurse, team member, and co-worker. She represents all that DAISY stands for!"
