Lauren called me first thing in the morning to tell me my husband became so sick he had to be intubated. Her voice was warm, friendly and reassuring. She didn't make any promises but she made me believe that R is in good hands. My first impression was right. I watched Lauren when she worked. She was so gentle with my husband. It wasn't just a nurse doing her job, it was so much more. She made sure he was comfortable, that he had all his medications, that his pain was controlled. When she gave me a report about the things that happened when I wasn't in the room I heard a person who has knowledge. She was familiar with all the tests and procedures. When necessary she didn't hesitate to call the doctor. She listened to me when I talked about my husband. She truly listened; she wasn't just standing there.
When the time came when there was nothing else the doctors could do and I decided on comfort care, Lauren waited for me to come so she could see if I have any questions, any concerns, and fears. She had all the booklets for me; she found a quilt to put on his bed. She was there on the last day. She didn't hesitate to give me a hug when I needed one. Lauren made sure I could keep my promise to my husband that he will not suffer. When he passed on she stayed with me, ready to help, to support, to care. If your loved one needs to be in a hospital I hope they will have a nurse just like Lauren.
