The ED received an EMS encode that said they "had an unresponsive patient and were coming in hot". The ED and Cardio team were at bedside awaiting the patient anticipating possible intubation or code. When the patient arrived, they were unresponsive and in an abnormal heart rhythm. EMS stated that the patient was a DNR so no extraordinary measures should be taken. The Charge RN contacted the patient's next of kin and the sister was very upset as the patient was a hospice patient and was sent to the ED in error against her wishes. The sister was very concerned that the patient would be alone. The Primary Nurse Lauren Barringer requested the MD help the patient and make them comfortable. Lauren stayed at the bedside with the patient, giving reassurance, warmed her with blankets and did not leave the room until she passed away. The family was very thankful that she was not alone and was soothed that Lauren was the nurse that made her comfortable, never left her alone and was with her as she passed away.
