You would think 7 weeks pregnant with a vaginal bleed is pretty common. My patient was a 41-year-old female who had tried for years to get pregnant and had exhausted all she had to get pregnant through fertilization clinics and for the first time she had an ultrasound that showed an embryo with a heartbeat. When my patient showed up in the emergency department she was devastated to the point of grief of hyperventilating - I was at bedside trying to console her when Lakeisha Washington walked in and said, "Oh no, we are not having this; breathe through your nose," and got her to calm down. The ultrasound tech came to take the patient to ultrasound and Lakeisha offered to go with her. The patient accepted her offer and I was told to watch her patients. It was great to see the compassion Lakeisha showed. She was not going to let the patient be alone in the time of her storm. Lakeisha went out of her way to ensure total patient care - she went the extra mile and is deserving of this special recognition.
