Kyera could not have been better. First, she spent time with my dad. Dad was critical but stable and totally alert. Because of the policies, my dad could not have visitors a lot and became bored. Kyera took the time to visit with him and have actual conversations. That meant a lot to him. Also, my dad had to have a filter put in his leg for blood clots. The procedure was right at noon and Dad had to fast prior to that. Kyera made sure Dad's lunch was staged and in his room so that he could have it immediately when he returned. Furthermore, the Radiologist team asked that Kyera stay with Dad prior to the procedure to monitor him. They told us that it would be a 30-minute procedure. It ended up being a 2-hour event. Obviously, being away from her station for 2 hours caused her to fall behind on her tasks. Also, the procedure was at noon, so she had no chance to eat, but the first thing she did when she got Dad back was microwave his food so he didn't have to eat it cold. And, because she had heard him complain about the 2% milk, she made it a point to find him some whole milk. She did all of that before she got herself anything to eat or even started getting caught back up on her work.
Later in the day, Dad needed to have a BM. Others would get him up, put him on the chair, and leave. This was fine, but Kyera stayed in the room with him because she was concerned about his O2 levels and that he might need assistance. She stayed right in there. She went on the other side of the curtain for privacy (but stood where she could see his monitors). She did not cough or make a single comment. Dad said he was worried he was going to be uncomfortable when she decided to stay, but that he was so impressed with how much dignity she gave the situation.
My dad likes coffee in the afternoon. One day he mentioned it to Kyera and she explained that they only have coffee in the morning. Dad told her that he wished they had a coffee pot so he could have some coffee, she didn't let the lack of immediate access stop her. She went and found him some coffee. Finally, as she was leaving for the day, she stopped in to tell Dad that she had ordered his breakfast for the next day. Earlier in the day, Dad mentioned during one of their conversations that he was craving pears and cottage cheese - something his mother used to serve him. So she stopped in she told him that she had arranged for him to have this for breakfast the next day.
My dad has a pulmonary condition. We have spent a lot of time in hospitals, unfortunately, but it does make us pretty good judges of not only capable nurses but also caring and compassionate nurses. Also, my late grandmother was a retired nurse (35 years). My dad says Kyera is the kind of nurse that would have made his mama proud.
