A couple was seen in our emergency department and upon discharge Kirstyn Domeikis, RN noted the couple arguing outside. The female then came back into the ER in a panicked manner and the male followed her in and pulled her back out by the arm. This caused Kirstyn to further investigate and go outside to monitor the situation. Once outside, Kirstyn noticed the male still holding the female patient by the arm and he began dragging her down the sidewalk while she screamed in pain and asked the male to let her go; which he would not. This prompted Kirstyn to call the police and HPD showed up immediately. Kirstyn gave a description of the couple and the officer then drove off to find, them since they left on foot. Kirstyn then went back inside to write out her police statement.
A few hours passed before the officer came back to collect Kirstyn's statement. Once he returned he informed Kirstyn that this was "way more than a case of assault/domestic violence". Upon police investigation, it was found out that the female had lied about her age and was only 14 years old. She had run away from Safe Haven after being removed from her family by CPS. The male she was with was 21 years old. The police officer told Kirstyn that this male had not only sexually abused the female but that he had been "selling her" out of a local motel off boulder highway that's known for sex trafficking. This officer also told Kirstyn that both the HPD and Metro police department were already en-route to this motel to raid the place to look for more underage females.
The HPD officer thanked Kirstyn for calling and reporting the violence towards the female and stated, "you probably saved her life". The male was arrested for assault, sex trafficking, and statutory rape.
This is a true example of skillful and compassionate care. Thank you, Kirstyn!
