In February, Richardson Police Department lost one of their brothers. An officer was fatally shot while entering into an apartment by an active shooter. He was brought to MCP by Richardson Fire Department where all efforts were made by the trauma team to save his life, but he did not survive.
One of the nurses in the room with him, Kim, while resuscitation efforts were being made, was also a police officer's wife. During the resuscitation, this nurse noticed a wedding ring on his finger. Upon seeing the wedding ring, Kim began praying for his wife, their family and for his police department.
This nurse stayed 3 hours after her shift to make sure everyone in the Emergency Department was okay. When she went home, she painted a beautiful picture. She later reached out to his wife and presented her with this painting. She also let his wife know that an officer's wife was in the room at his bedside, holding his hand and praying for her and his family.
This single, selfless act is one of the things that make up the core of an ER Nurse. Every day, we go above and beyond anything else we would do to show compassion to the patients and their families. We ourselves do not recognize these random acts of kindness because it's normal for us.
It's what we do.
