Kelsey was the bedside nurse for an ECMO patient that was going to have life support removed the following day. The father of the child asked her if there was any way he would be able to sleep next to his child this one last night. He stated that he had asked before but this was the last night. Kelsey didn't say "no" to him she said "let me look into it". Kelsey got a stretcher, measured it and thought it would work perfectly next to the crib. She asked the MD if it would be ok and he said "no problem". When the parents came back to the room and saw a bed next to the crib all ready for them they were so happy. The dad must have thanked her at least 6 times and gave her a big hug. It was the sweetest thing to see these parents take turns at the bedside sleeping and holding the hand of their daughter knowing what tomorrow would bring.
I have worked with Kelsey for four years and she is one of those nurses that never draws attention to herself. She works with a quiet, calm demeanor and is always there to help a co-worker. I think this must be one of many examples of her excellent nursing skills and kind, compassionate heart.
Kelsey gave this family something they will cherish forever-one last night sleeping next to their daughter, holding her hand.
