As Kellye was going to her car, she found an elderly man lying in the grass outside near the parking lot. He was in obvious distress as he had been lying there for quite some time. The temperature was close to 100 degrees that day. His wheelchair had broken in half as he tried to climb a small incline in the chair. He was a past stroke patient and paralyzed on one side. To add even more insult, he had a BKA on his good side. He could communicate enough with garbled speech for Kellye to determine what had happened and where he lived.
Kellye found that her cell phone was completely dead so she could not call for help. Since the parking lot is now closed on the weekends, she could not find assistance to help her, so the old man and Kellye decided to work together to move him to her car. Since he had been out there for some time, he had also soiled himself, but she did not let that stop her. She just knew she had to help this man, get him out of the heat and back to the place he called home, which was a nursing home down the street.
They struggled, but eventually, she got him into her car. Once they arrived with the man back at the Nursing home, she witnessed a gamut of emotions from the staff and the family. Since they had been looking all afternoon to no avail, she found people who were excited, angry and relieved all at the same time to see their patient and loved one returned safely. If Kellye had not come by and found this man or if she had chosen not to help this stranger, he could have easily succumbed to the elements due to his age and poor health.
I feel that Kellye deserves the DAISY Award as her behavior exemplifies the compassion and care that she has for people. It was a selfless act that she chose to get this man to safety by herself against some overwhelming physical and environmental barriers. I say awesome job Kellye!
