When I think of Kelly, I think of the words by Maya Angelou, "As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the mind, soul, heart, and body of our patients. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel." As a resource nurse, others would expect her to help you, but in this aspect, she does more than just that.
There was a time my dad was a patient here at UTMB and he was then sent to a skilled nursing facility, at that time we had encountered such a horrible experience at the facility and I had run into a wall. I saw Kelly and asked her for advice. She immediately called another care manager and asked for advice which saved the whole scenario. My dad was able to transfer to a long term acute care hospital.
When she sees you she always is eager to help and lend a hand. She never hesitates to answer a call light and assist a patient in need. She handles stressful situations with grace and dignity providing the best care to all patients here at UTMB. She stands as a patient advocate and collaborates with the various medical teams. There have been times that she needed to cover our floor because a nurse had to leave for the day, even though this could be a stressful situation she keeps going with a smile. She never makes you feel guilty or bad for asking for help or nursing advice. Throughout the day you will see Kelly, from walking to the lab to get specimen containers, to inserting IVs, drawing labs, assisting in rapids to even just helping a patient to the bathroom, this is the epitome of an awesome nurse. It is an honor to work with her.
