Kelly exemplified all the values of compassion, justice, excellence, dignity, integrity, and safety. An uncontrolled nosebleed and some post-surgery complications brought me and my 23-week unborn baby to the neuro CCU. On the first night that I can remember, I had a breathing tube and Kelly communicated with me using a small whiteboard to make sure my needs were met. On my second night, the breathing tube was taken out and I experienced some anxiety and difficulty learning to breathe on my own again. As I was lying in bed struggling to breathe at 3 am, Kelly came into my room to help calm me down. She noticed that my hair had been disheveled from days of being in the hospital. She took a comb and brushed my hair as we talked about potential baby names. She even put my hair in a cute side french braid! Having someone to talk/listen to instantly calmed me down and I felt my breathing become more regular. She also made sure that I could have some juice that night, which was the first time I ate or drank anything since being hospitalized several days prior. The entire neuro CCU nursing staff played an incredible role in my recovery, however, Kelly made me feel like more than a patient. She made me feel like a whole person. She helped advocate for me and distracted me from the unpleasant aspects of being hospitalized.
