Keelee Garvin exemplifies the kind of nurse that patients and families, as well as nurses physicians and other members of the health care team, recognize as an outstanding role model. A patient that was admitted earlier to unit 61 ran to the nursing station obviously upset and crying. She told the unit clerk that she received a call stating that her eleven year old son was shot in the stomach while at home. She could not reach her family and did not have transportation to get to her son's side. Keelee had just finished giving her 12 hour shift report and was preparing to leave when she over heard the patient. Without hesitation she rushed to the patient's side to console her and offered to take the patient to her son. She spoke to the admitting MD to facilitate her discharge and follow-up care needed. The patient was very grateful for her help and support. Later on the eleven o'clock news the patient's story unfolded. The reporter stated that her son was in critical condition at Grady. Keelee's quick, selfless response made all the difference to the patient.
