First let me begin by explaining a bit about our situation. Our son, James, was transferred to St. Joe's when he was 1 day old. He stayed there for 3 days before transferring out to Mott's hospital. Katie was the transfer nurse in the ambulance and our son's day nurse for the duration of his stay. It was a difficult time for us as we waited for the doctors to diagnose our son's problems. Katie was there with us each step of the way. She did little things like find blankets for his bed and bring "the comfortable" chairs for us to sit in. But she did so much more than that. As our son went through tests and procedures she was there caring for him. During rounds, she was able to comment on his change from day to day. She was able to judge things like his color, alertness and adema unlike anyone else. After rounds, she would go over what the doctor's orders were and make sure that we understood what was happening and why. Katie took time to explain everything about his care from his IVs to tests and x-rays. Not only was Katie there for our son, but for us as well. She seemed to have a sense for when we needed to cry and when we needed to talk about anything else except what we were going through. She helped us through a very trying emotional time. I think what sticks with me so much is a statement my husband said one day after we had arrived home from the hospital. I was upset over having left our baby, and he said, "He'll be fine, Katie's with him." That gave me such peace to know that she was there with him. Our son's total stay covered 3 hospitals and 19 days, and Katie was hands down the best nurse we ever had. Katie demonstrated everthing I could ever hope for in a nurse, exceptional care, geniune concern and the medical expertise to care for our son.
