We had a busy triage night and around 2 AM a patient came in at 30 wks gestation thinking she was in preterm labor. Her best friend followed her here in her vehicle. Kathy was the triage nurse and I was helping her with the patient. The patient was very concerned and afraid for her baby. Kathy being the kind and compassionate nurse that she is put her concerns to rest and explained everything we were going to do and that we would take excellent care of her here at New Beginnings. She wanted her boyfriend here with her but he had no vehicle and no way to get here. Her best friend offered to take the patient's car to pick him up. So she left with an address to find him. The best friend drove around and finally called the patient to tell her she couldn't find the address. She had used up all the gas in the car and needed to return to the hospital. The patient then had more stress added to her: no gas in her car and her significant other was still not with her. Kathy provided her with comfort and went above and beyond to make sure she didn't feel alone.

At the early part of the morning, she was able to be discharged but had no gas money to get home. So Kathy, being the kind hearted person that she is, gave her gas money to help her get home. The patient became tearful and graciously thanked Kathy and told her that she had been so sweet to her and was forever grateful for "Nurse Kathy".

That story pretty much sums up my co-worker Kathy. Her compassion and kindness shines every day she comes to work.
