Kate rose to the occasion and became a role model for all the other inpatient clinical units. She leads the way as the manager of the SPU - with her knowledge, training, and understanding of how to care for this new patient population of COVID patients.
Kate goes above and beyond for her unit. Kate works tirelessly to make sure that her entire team is always okay. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kate really showed us what she was made of, there was never a question that went unanswered. Her calm demeanor and constant reassurance of safety allowed her 7 west RNs to work fearlessly and the reassurance was felt throughout the rest of the COVID-19 units as well as every person she came in contact with.
Without Kate's amazing ability to multitask on the fly, run her team with compassion and care, I don't know where we would be. I could go on forever about how effortlessly brilliant Kate is and how her humility shines like a ray of sunshine but I would be here writing all day. She would turn red if she were called a hero, but she is truly one of a kind, a breath of fresh air, and a true SHERO to all who work with her. Kate you Rock!

The leadership strength I see Kate demonstrate most often is "grace under pressure". Especially during this difficult time, I have frequently seen Kate taking care of staff members that can be at times difficult both physically, emotionally, and mentally. Yet Kate never gets flustered or exasperated. Furthermore, I have seen Kate demonstrate this, on other units while covering for other Nurse Managers. Both staff and patients alike will be vying for her attention and she manages to take care of everyone's needs without ever becoming overwhelmed.

Unexpectedly, healthcare teams across the country were challenged to meet the demands of a pandemic. Kate rose to the occasion and became a role model for all the other inpatient clinical units. She leads the way as the manager of the SPU - with her knowledge, training, and understanding of how to care for this new patient population of COVID patients. She established care plans, supply lists, and staffing plans. Her unit was the first to admit in March and remains the only med/surg unit accepting patients 5 months later.
During and through all of this, she fully supported her staff, as well as the interdisciplinary team to maintain the exemplary practice, when caring for the potentially contagious group of patients. She guides them through the day to day, week to week, month to month twist and turns of this very complex disease, on current and best practices.
For her resilience, compassion, and being a role model for expertise during this entire pandemic, she is a true DAISY Nurse Leader.

Kate's experience managing the special pathogens unit was a great asset when developing guidelines for preventing exposure to patients and staff. Kate narrated most of the COVID-19 PPE teaching videos.
Kate is a wonderful mentor to her staff. Her compassion and enthusiasm are motivating factors for her staff and coworkers.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our unit (7W) was the first one to take COVID patients. The entire staff was terrified and in the dark regarding how we would manage and treat COVID patients. From the very first day, Kate protected us and advocated for us when we were unsure of policy changes, PPE, and pressures from outside sources. We always felt like we had the required protection and she kept us together as a team when we were stressed and worried. There were times when we were all afraid to come into work or times when we thought our lives would never be normal again. Our unit still houses COVID patients, and we are able to do it with confidence and skill that wouldn't have been possible without Kate's leadership. I can't identify a specific incidence that describes what Kate means to us. She demonstrates grace under pressure every single day and fosters an environment of teamwork and friendship among her staff.
