Kathleen went above and beyond my expectations while my dad was in M70. I'm in ICU nurse myself, but she allowed me to be just a family member for once and gave me a break from feeling like I needed to control my dad's care 24/7 and be a nurse even while not on the clock. My dad is not the type of patient to ask for much. He will complain of pain but not push the call bell to ask for his pain medications. Kathleen recognized this early on in the shift while caring for my dad and would come in before the medications were due to bring him his pain meds. My dad's number one positive comment about his hospital stay was "my nurse genuinely cared about my comfort". During this hospital visit, my dad who originally equated hospice with death realized that hospice is focused on being comfortable, and with some education provided by his nurse among others, made the decision to join hospice care so he can stay at home instead of inpatient. This kind nurse paged doctors numerous times for me to make sure I got all of my questions answered by the doctors and she even worked around my schedule to make sure they could come to talk to me before I had to leave the hospital. As I move forward in my own nursing career, I hope I am able to make a lasting impression on my patients as Kathleen has made for my family and me. Thank you for your empathy and compassion during such a difficult time.
