My baby was born at 32 weeks. The NICU was the scariest place I had ever been to. I was emotional and petrified and lost. First-time mother, single, and deflated, along with exhausted. Kathleen was our nurse one night and she really changed my perspective on the entire situation. She taught me without judging, she laughed with me and talked me through a cry. And she was there for my son, not me! She took the best care of him and explained everything she was doing and why. With understanding comes acceptance and she made our visit in the NICU less scary. She spoke of what I would need to do at home. The knowledge and hope she gave me, along with the most absolute wonderful care she gave my son really will stick with me for life. I am so thankful she was my nurse that one night--and hope to see her again as his nurse. She deserves the world as well as she took care of mine. And all the nurses who take care of the littlest patients deserve those cinnamon rolls!
