Kathleen Farless, RN epitomizes the true spirit of nursing, and VPH ICU is incredibly grateful to have her part of our family. Recently, a patient required a Life Vest (a wearable cardioverter defibrillator that protects patients at risk of sudden cardiac death). Obtaining this Life Vest was the only part needed for the patient to be discharged home. The patient expressed frustration at the delay and wanted to leave Against Medical Advice (AMA). Kathleen actively listened to the patient's concerns, provided emotional support, and educated the patient on the importance of the Life Vest. Kathleen then worked tirelessly to obtain the Life Vest for that patient, communicating with Case Management, Social Services, and the Zoll® Vendor. Ultimately, she was able to persuade the patient to safely remain at the hospital and obtain their Life Vest.
Kathleen's helpfulness extends beyond the patients', their families and friends. She assists every member of the healthcare team, EVS, Transportation, Physical Therapy, and the list goes on. Her positive attitude and compassion brighten the atmosphere of the ICU. This is especially important due to the often heartbreaking and stressful situations ICU staff encounter. When she is working on the unit, nurses feel supported. Kathleen uplifts her team members, giving them strength and confidence when they are experiencing difficult shifts. Kathleen has also been an integral part of training the next generation of Critical Care Nurses. She serves as a primary preceptor due to her expertise and kindness. Not only does Kathleen teach, but she also never stops learning. She successfully passed the Open-Heart training and has been a great addition to that team. Overall, Kathleen has made a positive impact on all the lives of her patients and team members.
