Katie was described as being a true blessing to the children of a patient who received hospice care, during the final days of her life. This family will forever remember Katie's respect and kindheartedness. In the words of the patient's daughter:
"Every time Katie was assigned to my Mom's care, I felt a strong sense of security. During Mom's terminal illness, Katie explained every medical procedure and told us what to expect. Katie was my emotional rock, as I stayed in my Mother's room for 40 days.
I will always remember Katie's kindness and sense of humor. She even visited Mom when she was not assigned to care for her. When Mom had a bad night, and I thought she was dying, Katie calmed me down. My brothers and I feel Katie was a blessing given to our family…"
Katie's manager describes her as one with a gentle nature that is seen through her tears and concerns for patients and their families. Katie can also be "strong as nails" when advocating for her patients or when she perceives things can be improved.
She is recognized by her colleagues as a team player. When rounding, nurse leaders have been told by Katie's patients they were touched by the individualized care she provides them. Patients also appreciate Katie for treating them as a whole human being and not just a patient for the shift. Patients feel connected to Katie. Once you are a patient of Katie's, you are always a patient of Katie's as she routinely visits her past patients to encourage them and to check on their progress.
A heartfelt thanks and well deserved congratulations to Katie Engebretsen.
