My three-year-old son was admitted to the ER via ambulance from a very severe asthma attack. He was comatose when he arrived in the ER and then spent the day in PICU before being transferred to Legacy Tower.
A lot of medicine and steroids were in his little body and Katie was very patient, caring and attentive to his needs. He didn't like having the IV flushed, so she let him "help" and explained why it was important. She built a great rapport with my son and helped us keep him occupied and upbeat. He had to get some blood work done later in the week and lamented "I want Nurse Katie" to the lab tech. He was still talking about her several weeks after our stay.
Katie also took the time to answer my many questions and share her experiences. She followed up with the doctors to answer our questions and helped us understand when and who we needed to see for discharge. She shared some good questions for us to ask the pulmonology department and helped to expedite the discharge process when we were finally released.
This was a terrifying experience for us (my husband and I were overseas when the attack occurred) and Katie and the whole team at Texas Children's were phenomenal! They were well-coordinated and showed genuine care and concern for my son's recovery and well-being. The transitions from day to night were seamless.
We didn't want to be in a life-threatening situation like that but I'm so glad that we were under the great care of the team at Texas Children's Hospital.
