Karen was my nurse here on the Aspen Unit when I finally was ready to leave my room after five days of isolation. I was scared, apprehensive, and nervous and had no self-confidence. When first introducing herself, she told me that she was my nurse and if I needed anything, big or small to come to her. She told me not to be afraid to come to her with anything. It felt like she could read me without knowing me at all. She said the exact words to make me feel safe here. With a PTSD diagnosis, I struggle to feel safe anywhere. That same night she took the time to go through items in my locker that the other workers didn't have the patience for and gave me what I could and couldn't have - for example, shampoo, coloring books, school work, and colored pencils. All the simple things I use for coping skills and that gave me a sense for home and peace here on the unit. To everyone else, those things seemed pointless and not needed, but Karen could see how much those things meant to me. In spite of a long line of needy patients and other duties, she took the time to help me feel safe - to feel like I had a part of home with me. She gave me the tools I needed to battle my anxiety and let go of the flight or fight mode I practically live on. She made my time here feel like a blessing instead of a punishment. I'll never forget Karen's patience and kindness.

She took the time to sit down with me and had an in-depth conversation with me. I shared that I am a new believer/Christian and she shared that she has spent time as a missionary. She suggested several books for me to read. In essence, she treated me as a real person who was due respect - as opposed to a psych patient who just needs meds. She was very receptive to me every time I approached her for something. I understand that nurses get busy and can't always stop what they're doing to speak with you - but she did it graciously and respectfully.

"If I were a patient, I would want Karen as my nurse!"
