On August 23, 2010, I received a phone call at work. The voice on the other end asked if I was Karen and worked on Orthopedics. I answered “yes”. She went on to ask if I had cared for her grandmother who was discharged from the hospital the week before and how grateful she was to me. As she continued, she explained that when her grandmother was discharged from the hospital, her medications were accidentally left behind. This young lady cares for her grandmother and knew she could not return to the hospital to get those medications for at least a week as they lived in Wauchula and transportation was difficult. By this time I knew it wasn’t me she was talking about but Karen on the night shift. I clarified and we chuckled at the mix-up. She continued to tell me how Karen drove all the way to Wauchula to get those medications to her that day. She stated that “she went above and beyond” and they were so thankful for her thoughtfulness and that they wanted to contact her and do something for her. She told me she didn’t know what she would have done without those medications and for Karen to take them to her was marvelous, “driving all that way!” A couple of days later, I saw Karen and asked her if she received my message regarding this call. She stated that she did. When I told her how thankful the grand-daughter was, Karen said to me “well if it were my grandmother, what would I have done?” Karen told me she had taken directions to meet the granddaughter and she and her husband drove there to give her the medications. She talked about it as though it were a small thing that didn’t really matter. I told Karen how impressed this family was and how thankful they were of effort to get those medications to them. This was truly a special act of caring.
