My daughter recently had bilateral myringotomy and tube insertion. Overall it was a wonderful experience, but I wanted to highlight Karen's care. Karen was her operative nurse and she was simply fantastic! She did a great job of being proactive and thorough in every aspect of her care- from explaining any potential glitches due to the new EHR, to inquiring about my daughter's milestones, to what to expect the surgical process to be, to what my daughter's demeanor may be like after surgery. The two things my husband and I felt made her care extraordinary were: she explained (more than once) that she would be with my daughter the entire time. My husband found this extremely comforting knowing she wasn't going to be passed from nurse to nurse who didn't get to know her during the pre-op time. Second, when Karen went to take my daughter from my arms, to go to surgery, my daughter grabbed on tightly to me. I asked for a couple of seconds so I could show Karen something. Even though she knew others were waiting she granted me that time. This allowed me to take a couple steps back and jump towards Karen with my daughter in my arms (she loves bouncing and jumping). My daughter more willingly went to Karen when we played this game. But the part that took the cake was Karen continued to bounce with her through the surgical doors, down the hall; keeping her happy. It is not easy to hand over your child (even for a simple procedure) but Karen simply provided some of the best personalized care I have ever witnessed.
