Karen Bacosa exemplifies what it means to be a compassionate nurse not only at Kaiser Permanente but within the community. After having the opportunity to work closely with Karen for only a few weeks I've seen firsthand her passion for educating staff and the community about strokes. She takes it upon herself to attend every Code Stroke to ensure the utmost safety and recovery of the patient. She makes time in her busy schedule to do community outreach such as participating in stroke fairs, attending stroke conferences and doing education pop-ups on and off-campus. Karen also takes time to provide monthly Stroke Support Groups for stroke survivors and their caretakers, as well as welcomes anyone in the community to join, not just Kaiser Permanente members. Karen's passion for ensuring patient and community awareness is very evident and it would be a great disservice to not shine a light on the services she provides to Kaiser Permanente and the community. One shining example of why Karen is a DAISY Nurse occurred when a stroke patient was denied outpatient rehabilitation services. Karen felt the patient could greatly benefit from rehab and instead of accepting the result Karen advocated for the patient by finding the right channels that could re-review the case. Due to Karen's advocacy and diligence, the patient was ultimately accepted into the rehab service!
