I had a patient who had been here for quite some time and had a difficult and complicated stay, including having to be intubated and in the ICU at one point. I started my shift at 7pm and the moment I walked in the patient's room he started talking about how he needed a special shaving cream. He said he could only use a very specific kind of shaving cream on his face. He said it was particularly important because if he let his beard get too long the hair starts to curl back into itself and becomes very painful. I could tell how important it was to the patient. I went to see what nurses were coming in at 11pm and I saw Justin's name and I knew right away that I could ask him. I texted Justin and asked him if he would by any chance be going to Giant Eagle on his way in and if he wouldn't mind picking up this man his shaving gel. Of course, even though Justin had no other reason to go to Giant Eagle, he went out of his way and went to the store and got it for him. When Justin came in at 11 and brought this man his shaving cream he was so happy. First thing he did was shave and the rest of the night he was grinning ear to ear how happy he was. He later said to me, "No one thought it was that important if I could shave or not, but it was important to me!". He made this patient's day, and you could tell the patient just felt better afterwards. I know I can always count on Justin when he's on and he really did go out of his way for my patient.
