Justin has been a welcomed addition to the Interventional Radiology Department for the past year. Justin has a passion for treating the whole patient and not just view him/her as "just a procedure".

I need to have a prelude too about our department before sharing Justin's stories. Our department has limited patient contact as we complete a procedure and return them to the outpatient recovery or to the inpatient department. Having a close relationship with the James, we implant many devices for stem cell transplants, lines for central chemo administration, as well as many other opportunities.

This story deals with a bone marrow transplant patient. She had come in for a line so she could receive her transplant. With this patient population, they are in the hospital room for six weeks or longer. In prepping this patient, Justin was striking up a conversation with her about Schmidts' cream puffs. She was telling him how much she likes eating them as well. The patient made comment that she would be in the hospital so she wouldn't be able to have one for some time. That night, Justin went to Schmidts and purchased a cream puff for this patient. He delivered it to her on the BMT unit. What joy it brought to her that he took the time out to think of her.

Patients are anxious when they come to Interventional Radiology department for procedures. Justin ensures that patients are relaxed through their choice of music on Pandora. He also will sing to the patient to make them at ease.

His compassion towards his patients is evident through his interactions and conversations he has with each of them as well as the patient's family members. He treats each and every patient as he would his family member.
