Last May my son was taken to the ED after suffering a head injury in a car crash. Soon after being seen in the ED, he was taken to ICU where he spent 3 weeks before being transferred to the NTCU. While in the ICU he had a trach. Not long after, the trach abscessed and the hole gradually became larger and larger and he was taken back to the NTCU. This is where we met the nurse who seemed to know exactly what to do and how to care for my son. Julie was not intimidated by the condition of my son's trach. She knew exactly how to care for him and had a routine on how care was to be provided. She gave him the very best care. She even offered to watch my younger son (who wasn't permitted to visit) so I could visit. Her knowledge about his condition and planning for his care, her professionalism in how she provided care, her compassion and her emotional support went above and beyond. Julie was the first nurse to care for my son on NTCU and continued to care for him during his stay. As a mother of a critically injured child, I cannot say how much of a relief it was to know he would be receiving the very best care both physically and emotionally. Thank goodness for Julie!
