One day, a patient had been found to be profusely bleeding by the mouth in her room by another nurse. Juliana Toro immediately recognized what was occurring and sprang into action. She stood behind the patient and put pressure on her carotid arteries near the collarbone. Her quick thinking and action bided the patient more time as the code team was called. Despite the pain she was having for compressing the arteries, Juliana did not relent and never let go.
During the entire ordeal, Juliana said words of encouragement to the patient and did the best she could to soothe the patient's fears while providing clinical help. Juliana continued to stay at the bedside after someone from the code team offered to keep the pressure on the patient's arteries. She held the patient's hand even though her own were numb from the constant compression. Our patient survived the traumatic ordeal and she was able to be taken to the ICU without further issues. Not only did she show her clinical prowess, but also her compassion and dedication to the patient as a human being that is going through a frightening affliction.
