To most nurses and patients who know Joyce Mack, that is all that needs to be said. Her name is a reminder to all of what a nurse should strive to be. Joyce has been a nurse at TGMH since 1989. She loves being a nurse and working at TGMH so much that she drives from North Myrtle Beach to work here. That is an hour and a half one way for those that have never made the trip. Many of our patients and family members recognize Joyce and remember the excellent care she provides. On arrival to 2 East, they greet her by name and provide smiles and hugs.
Joyce is a charge nurse on 2 East and provides the very best patient-centered care every time she clocks into work. I have only known Joyce for a year now and I have witnessed her going above and beyond countless times. Joyce not only does charge and take patients she also assists in caring for every patient every shift. She is a true team player with assisting co-workers throughout their shifts.
Joyce recognizes patient needs that others may miss and ensures they will be taken care of. In December of 2017, she showered her co-workers and even their families with thoughtful gifts. She has also been known to bring in presents to patients without families who will be spending Christmas with us at the hospital. One Thanksgiving she called to remind staff to take a patient who had been admitted on our floor for several months a plate from our unit Thanksgiving dinner. Stating, "no one should miss Thanksgiving dinner". She helps patients who cannot afford medications by assisting with copayments at our in-house pharmacy to ensure that they will have the correct medications at discharge. For those patients, she also makes sure they will have continued assistance for the months to come through the Smith Clinic (a nonprofit low-cost clinic) prior to discharge. She has also been seen on several occasions in the past year buying clothes and food for her patients in need. Joyce not only provides for patients and families while at work, but she volunteers in the community and atchurch.
Joyce does all of the above and much, much more but remains selfless. In fact, she will most likely be upset with me for recognizing her. I can hear her now saying that she doesn't need or want to be recognized. She simply does what she does because she loves being a nurse! Joyce is a true DAISY Nurse.
