I received a report from Josh Williams on day shift for two patients. One of these patients was a sickle cell kiddo (typical for this floor) with a head injury/concussion (not so typical for this floor). As float pool, this type of patient is not so out of the ordinary, but when the medical team isn't as familiar with these patients it can be hard to feel the support you need.
Josh was extremely thorough with his report, after having this patient for two nights in a row, giving exact details about the patient, the event that brought him to the hospital, what he was concerned about, and what he felt the doctors were and were not concerned about.
Walking into the room I felt prepared to care for this patient, in a not so ideal setting, even down to how to help the patient's mom give him his medicine. On my first assessment of this patient, the patient woke up and asked if Josh was still here and that he liked his nurse Josh. The mother stated that Josh had been "awesome" and she "loved talking to him" and asked if he would be working again that night because she wanted to thank him for everything he had done for them. The patient was later sent to the PICU after further imaging was done, which Josh had informed the family of the night before, told them which team would be consulted/what to expect/what they were looking for/etc. Josh had overall set a great foundation for communication between the mother, patient, and medical team, which led to a smooth transition to a higher level of care.
Josh made a great connection with the family which led to a means of open communication. This made a world of difference in how our day went with the transition to the PICU, but the family felt very comfortable and prepared for the events, which also made my job a lot easier!
Josh was spot on with his concerns, made great recommendations that were brought up in rounds, and really set me up to have a great day with this family. It was clear that all the hard work and communication that Josh did with the mother and patient on his two shifts made all the difference in this patient's care.
