His admission diagnosis was hyperglycemia. His living situation was not great; this young person was homeless with type 1 diabetes. How challenging would that be to manage? He had been going through withdrawals from whatever substances he was injecting into his body. He was depressed. I asked him, "If I was your fairy godmother and could grant you one wish, what would it be?" With all these obstacles in his life, this patient was polite and I wished there was something we could do for him. He told me that he passed out while waiting for an ambulance and his stuff got stolen, including his guitar. That was his wish: a guitar. I shared this with our wonderful charge nurse. Well, this was the last shift on our unit for that wonderful charge nurse; he was going to start an internship in the PACU the very next day. The charge nurse, Josh, returned to 14C the following morning to drop off a guitar for the patient, but in a humble manner, without the patient knowing where it came from. Josh Rengert is deserving of the DAISY Award.
