Joe had a patient who was admitted with flu and the patient's daughter was admitted to the ED for the flu the next day. Unfortunately, the patient's daughter passed away. The patient was going to leave AMA to attend his daughter's funeral. Joe called the funeral home with the patient's permission and explained the father was not well enough to be discharged to attend the funeral. The funeral home changed the date of the funeral so that the father could safely attend. Joe has the heart of a nurse who went well above the call of duty with that act of kindness. That gesture of compassion will forever be remembered by myself and the patient. He deserves to be recognized for his demonstration of kindness, compassion, and understanding.
