Jose was recognized by a patient who said that Jose quickly tended to her with a sincere care when she was in terrible pain. Jose made her feel comfortable and she knew she was in capable hands. When returning back to her room from an X-ray and CT scan, Jose saw the patient in the hallway and kindly stopped what he was doing and told the young lady wheeling the patient that he could take it from there. The young lady offered to continue, but Jose insisted that he had nothing better to do than return the patient to her room. The patient said that during a difficult moment, Jose made her feel like a family member and not just another number. She asked Jose multiple questions and he took the time to answer each one thoroughly and made sure she understood. The patient said that she couldn't pinpoint one particular instant that made Jose stand out because from the moment he identified himself as her nurse, she felt cared for every moment afterward. She said she was hospitalized for four days and although all of her nurses and staff were exemplary, she has not forgotten Jose.
Jose's director says that Jose is quite honestly the best nurse we have in the ED. As the reigning Nightingale award winner, it is not hard to see why his patients and colleagues love him. Jose is always coming to work with a positive attitude and a desire to make his patients and teammates feel like they are special. He takes time to mentor and teach and is always booked up by interns and residents when he's on shift. Jose works extra to help out the department and truly cares about everyone he works with. His director constantly receives compliments from patients about how great Jose is and how he always goes above and beyond. Jose has presented nationally at the 2017 AONE conference and did a great job representing the hospital.
Because of Jose's compassionate and caring efforts, his patients experience a level of care that exemplifies the impact nurses have in creating an environment where patients and families feel at home.
