On that first critical night when the doctors could not tell us definitively if my dad was going to be alright, Jordan was so good to us. Her energy was steady, consoling and always affirming. Jordan's personality was upbeat and always positive. She became our rock, keeping our family informed, answering all questions. When a procedure we were waiting on (IV on the neck) couldn't be done we realized that my dad was still in danger. Jordan spent time with our family as we gathered together, not knowing if we were about to say goodbye to our father. She patiently answered a multitude of questions, now from 7-8 members of the family and waited with us. Jordan seemed to slip so easily into our family dynamic; it seemed so natural that she gave us strength. It must be hard to have a family turn to you with such expectations and asking for hope and you accept that responsibility with such grace and compassion. We needed someone like Jordan that first night.
We got to see Jordan in action on subsequent days, while she took care of my dad, concerned and vigilant in her care. She never talked down to my father; treated him with dignity and respect. She was exemplary. Jordan was off after the weekend, so we thought we would not see her again. But she was on duty Tuesday and we were so grateful and happy to see her. Jordan's compassion and motivation to make sure my father got the best of care superseded any ego. When she realized that yet another IV had to be relocated, knowing my father's arms, hands and veins were over used and abused, Jordan called upon a colleague known for their ability to get an IV in right on the first attempt. She said, "I know my weaknesses and my strengths." How refreshing and I respect her so much for that. As I watched the team of nurses together, I realized I was watching a sisterhood in nursing. All wonderful, but working together they became one mega nurse. Throughout my life, I have been exposed to many hospital settings. Henry Ford does it right.
