Jordan is normally a day-shift nurse. Graciously, she helped out one day and picked up a night shift. That night, she had a group in the back while I was assigned to a group in the front of the unit. Even being apart, we checked on each other frequently. This night, like many others, was a very busy one.
I assisted her in obtaining an IV for one of her patients. Later, I found out that this patient was on comfort measures and needed the IV to help deliver medications to assist in keeping her comfortable during this phase of life. This patient, in particular, was very sweet and a joy to take care of.
Later, Jordan checked on her patient again. She was still there, only this time she was different. Her time was nearing the end. The room was more quiet, the patient more at peace. Jordan stayed with her.
I passed by her room again and Jordan was kneeled down next to the patient singing and humming Amazing Grace. At the time, there was no family present at the bedside. Seeing her remain at her patient's side touched my heart. The patient wouldn't be alone, she had her nurse. Her nurse loved her and for that moment, her nurse WAS her family.
This softened my heart and showed me if you think you have nothing left to give as a nurse, you DO have something to give, even if it's your presence. Your presence can mean everything to someone. It's more than a job. It's love.
